The Mammoth Community Water District provides water and sewer services to the Town of Mammoth Lakes in Mono County, California. This small resort community is located on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains at an elevation of approximately 8,000 feet above sea level. The Town is surrounded by lands administered by the Inyo National Forest, and the economy of the area is primarily based on recreation and tourism, with a majority of the visitation coming during the winter ski season.

Mammoth Mountain ski area is one of the premier ski areas in the country, with a season that generally runs from mid-November to Memorial Day. Cross country skiing, snowmobiling and dog sledding are also popular. The surrounding Forest Service lands offer a number of summer recreation opportunities including fishing, hiking, camping, biking, horseback riding, tennis and golf. Mammoth Lakes is a gateway community for such world-class attractions as Yosemite National Park, Devils Postpile National Monument and Death Valley National Park, as well as the John Muir and Ansel Adams Wilderness areas.

The Town of Mammoth Lakes occupies a forested basin between the alpine environment of the Sierra Crest and the high desert environment of the Great Basin. Most of the area's precipitation comes as winter snowfall, with the area receiving close to 30 feet of snow annually.
