Help Us Stop the LADWP Water Grab!

The Los Angeles Department of Water & Power (LADWP) is repeating its historic Owens Valley Water Grab. Just in time for the 100th anniversary of the LA Aqueduct opening and draining the Owens River. LADWP is suing the Mammoth Community Water District (MCWD), attacking MCWD's long-standing water diversions from Mammoth Creek for use in Mammoth homes and businesses.

LADWP recently filed two baseless lawsuits against MCWD. One lawsuit challenges MCWD’s Final Environmental Impact Report concerning the establishment of long-term fishery bypass flows for Mammoth Creek. The other lawsuit challenges MCWD’s 2010 Urban Water Management Plan (UWMP), which identifies how the District will fulfill the community’s water needs as its population grows in the future.

In each lawsuit, LADWP alleges that MCWD has no valid water rights to divert water from Mammoth Creek – the community’s primary water source. But, MCWD’s water rights are solidly founded in state law and have been relied by upon by our community for more than 60 years.

LADWP’s unfounded lawsuits will cost ratepayers significantly and will not result in more water for anyone.

LADWP will actually BENEFIT from the fishery bypass flow requirements which it is challenging in one of its lawsuits. LADWP’s legal challenge attempts to undermine an exhaustive, 20-year environmental study to determine the stream flows necessary to sustain a healthy trout population in Mammoth Creek.

We need your help telling Los Angeles city officials to stop this LADWP water grab.
