2026 Summer Construction Update
This construction season, MCWD will complete many smaller projects, largely out of public view. Instead of monthly location updates the District is publishing a pre-season plan and will follow up with an end-of-season summary of completed work.
Contracted Projects - Managed by MCWD Staff
- Roof replacements: Three buildings at MCWD wastewater plant.
- Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades: Repairing and/or replacing several major components of aging infrastructure.
- T-2 Water Tank Rehabilitation: Applying a protective interior coating and installing structural reinforcements to the 500,000 gallon tank to extend the life of the asset.
- Asphalt Slurry Seal at MCWD Main Campus: A slurry seal will be applied to protect and extend the useful life of the recently paved campus.
- Sewer Rehabilitation Projects: Annually, the District targets sections of the extensive sewer system that need maintenance and repairs to extend the useful life of the system. The project focuses on manhole interiors, concrete collars on utility surface features, and lining sewer mains.
- Paving: Prior to winter each year, repairs are made to any pavement in the community impacted by District operations and projects.
In-House Projects
- New Fire Hydrants (Pending a USFS Permit): Consistent with the District’s Strategic Plan, several new hydrants will be installed around the community along the Urban Wildland Interface to help protect the community in the event of a wildfire.
- Zone 5 Connector (Pending a USFS Permit): Installing a water pipeline to connect Mammoth RV Park to Commerce Circle. This will ensure water delivery to the eastern portion of town in event of an emergency by creating a redundant connection. It will also improve fire flow and water quality.
- Digital Mapping of Infrastructure: This is a multi-year effort to improve digital accuracy of District resources. Staff are using recently upgraded GPS and GIS technology to digitally map resources that may need to be located while under the snow during winter. This data collection provides a highly accurate digital resource that replaces outdated technology and paper maps.
- TOML Support: MCWD staff will relocate multiple pieces of conflicting infrastructure ahead of the Town of Mammoth Lakes Minaret Multi-Use Path construction project.
- Monitoring Wells: Staff will complete work that was started by contractors last fall. This work was unable to be completed last year due to low groundwater levels in the fall.
- Groundwater Treatment Plant Backup Power: Staff will complete a two-year project to install an emergency backup power source at one of the groundwater treatment plants. This is to ensure the plant can provide clean drinking water to the community in the event of a prolonged power outage.
- Ongoing Maintenance Projects: The District’s three specialized maintenance departments will be tackling a large volume of small projects throughout the community over the next several months.
- Hydrant repairs
- Water valve repairs
- Air relief valve replacements
- Water meter repairs and relocations
- Sewer lift station upgrades (Lakes Basin)
- Well upgrades
